You CANNOT spend money on...

  • Food for individuals. You can only spend money on food and drinks when it is to cater a meeting or event (this includes occasional Members Event Meals i.e. Christmas Dinner).

  • Personalised merchandise or clothing, i.e. you cannot have an individual's name on a hoodie bought with your society or community's money

  • Prizes to give to individuals. You can only buy prizes if they are to remain within the society or community (e.g. a trophy)

  • Alcohol for socials or events

  • Beef and single-use plastics

  • Things that the Union can reasonably provide for free, e.g. venue hire

  • Gift cards of any sort

The key thing to remember is that everything you buy with society or community money belongs to the society or community. You cannot take home what you purchase with this money, and everything purchased will continue to belong to next year's committee. So, you can make purchases for the society or community as a whole, but not for any individuals.

We also cannot donate society or community money to charity due to charity commission law.
