Candidate for the position of Trans and Non-Binary Students' Officer

M Libaert-Cox

Breaking the barriers for trans* students

Within the UK, Trans and Non-Binary people are facing issues more frequently, and these should not extend to the classroom nor the lecture hall. As a young Non-Binary person, I know the impact that government decisions have made on the lives of trans* and gender non conforming students. My manifesto is simple. Make the university experience easier and better for trans* and Non-binary* people. Below, I will outline my top 5 priorities

  1. I pledge to advocate for the installation and maintenance of more gender neutral toilets throughout the campus and ensure they are all in working order. Further, I will make sure each cubicle has all facilities available for anyone who may access them. Despite only being at goldsmiths a few weeks, I have seen how there are limited amounts of gender neutral toilets, which are often out of order or in some cases, in a different building entirely.
  2. The process of updating personal information, such as name and gender identity, should be transparent and straightforward. I will be committed to enhancing the existing support services, keeping information up to date, and readily accessible. This will be a top priority, streamlining the process for students who seek to align their university records with their identites.
  3. I aim to collaborate with student wellbeing advisors to create safe spaces and support groups specifically tailored to the needs of trans, non-binary, and gender questioning students. This initiative will empower students to navigate the political landscape effectively and understand the implications of various political parties' agendas when the general election arrives within the next two years.
  4. The sporting community at Goldsmiths should be inclusive to all, regardless of gender identity. I will work tirelessly to increase the number of mixed teams and ensure that trans students can participate in the teams that align with their preferred gender. The barriers that are being erected in prestigious sports governing bodies to exclude trans individuals from sports should not be followed here, and instead we should strive to create an environment where everyone can play comfortably and safely.
  5. Ultimately, Goldsmiths should be a haven where students do not fear coming out to their peers or correcting others on their pronouns. I plan to institute simple yet impactful measures, including encouraging the use of pronouns in email signatures, the sale of pronoun pins, with profits benefiting trans charities, and raising awareness about trans issues on both local and global scales.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Manifesto, and I hope I can count on your vote this year!
